Top of the Rock

Top of the Rock: Inside the Rise and Fall of Must See TV
By Warren Littlefield
Doubleday, 2012. 326 pgs.  Nonfiction

NBC was the undisputed programming champion through most of the 1990’s.  Beginning with ‘The Cosby Show’ and dimming with ‘Will and Grace’, few other networks have had such a run of prime time success.  ‘Top of the Rock’ is the story of that success told by the people who experienced it including Jerry Seinfeld, Jason Alexander, Kelsey Grammer, Noah Wylie, Jack Welch, Dick Wolf, and many others.

As NBC President of Entertainment during this exciting era, Warren Littlefield presents a juicy expose of all the drama behind the comedy.  The changing narration can be a bit distracting as readers try to keep track of the executives, producers, directors, and writers whose names are not as familiar as the actors.  However, it also allows for a quick pace and fascinating perspectives.  This is a great book for pop culture enthusiasts and anyone who remembers the Peacock Network’s golden age.
